Plastic Bag by Ramin Bahrani is a short film that follows the life of a plastic bag. This bag is originally in a store and is given life when it is used for the first time. We see the owner of this bag use it for various different things such as holding ice, dog food and even picking up dog poop before it is eventually thrown away. Werner Horzog is the narrator of the film and is speaking as the bag. Throughout the whole film he speaks softly and calmly even though he doesn’t like the circumstances he is in. Once the bag is thrown away it goes on an adventure and seeks its way back t its owner. The music in this film is sad and makes the audience feel bad for the bag because it misses its owner. Many of the scenes are very mellow and give us a sense of loneliness and sadness. We want the bag to be happy and want him to find his owner. After a long journey, the bag eventually makes its way to the Pacific Ocean. I think in a way this shows us what happens to some trash and how a lot of it makes it to the ocean. The bag loves being in the ocean and likes floating in circles. At the end the bag says that he wishes that he could get back to his owner but knows it will never happen. At the end the bag says that he wish that he could die. I think that this could also be some kind of environmental video that is trying to show people what happens to trash and maybe showing us the importance of recycling. This short film did a great job of making a lasting impact and getting the point across.
Trine Lindberg: “Plastic Bag” by Ramin Bahrani is a short film about a plastic bag’s journey through life. The plastic bag tells us about where his journey began, in the grocery store, and we follow him through his many ups and downs at his maker’s house. He likes it there because he feels useful. Several times he’s saying that he has a purpose, which evidently is important to him. When he’s separated from his maker, his journey continues. He’s drifting far, far away, and ends up at the vortex, which according to other plastic bags is like paradise. At the end, when he’s floating in the water, he’s saying that he wish his creator would create him so that he could die. This is a sad moment, and the music enhances that. We feel bad for the plastic bag. I definitely think an underlying theme in this short story is recycling. We’re reminded that what we throw in the garbage ends up somewhere. I really enjoyed this film because it was so different than anything that I’ve seen before. The story was narrated by the plastic bag’s point of view, and I really liked that. I think that made the film unique. I also liked how Bahrani filmed in the plastic bag’s point of view multiple times. This worked well with the narration.
Caroline Ficken: Plastic Bag by Ramin Bahrani chronicles the story of a plastic bag admiration for a woman and his journey to find her after being separated. He travels to return to her facing water, trees, bushes, and lack of wind. He encounters horses, birds, and another bag searching for her “maker.” The film has beautiful cinematography that conveys loneliness and isolation and also the beauty of the wind that carries the bag to and fro. I love the concept of chronicling a plastic bag and the simplicity of the story. It focuses on something we see often that is entirely forgotten and meaningless to us but serves a bigger purpose.

Shelby Anderson: "Plastic Bag" by Ramin Bahrani is a short film following the interesting personification of a plastic bag. The narrative of the film was very well done and rather insightful. By taking such an ordinary, overlooked object and making it the subject, Bahrani created a rather insightful story on something we tend to disregard. My favorite part of the film, however, was the cinematography. I think the shots were so striking. They utilized the open space behind and around the subject to further create this mood of isolation. One of my favorite shots was when the plastic bag is floating in the ocean with the jellyfish. I thought the initial exposition of that sequence and the contrast between the two subjects was really striking and visually appealing. The light throughout was very effective, and the use of the movement of the bag added an extra oomph to the shots that made them much more dynamic.
