Shelby Anderson: The short film "Pearl was Here" by Kate Marks focuses on the convenience store adventure of a young girl, Pearl. Pearl climbs into a stuffed animal claw machine and refuses to come out at her mother's persistence and threatening. Even once a firefighter breaks the machine open, she is very resistant and has to be literally pulled out, resulting in the applause of a gathered audience and a slap from her mother. No real, straight forward information is given toward Pearl's background, however Marks uses a lot of small details to build a good idea of her life. Her appearance isn't particularly clean or tidy, and she appears to have a tattoo on her back. She fishes through the candy machines for leftover/free candy and steals used gum from the side of one of the machines. Her mother looks tired and disheveled, and is wearing what appears to be a classic diner uniform. All of these things imply she comes from a fairly low-income family. Her stubborn, rambunctious actions towards her mother and to other authority as well as her mother's short temper, drained comments and physical abuse also direct the audience to believe that her home life isn't great either. It makes us question what the story is behind this small girl. Additionally, her mother threatens to call someone named "Russell" and it merits a very strong reaction from Pearl. My assumption is that Russell is either a father/ex-husband that resulted in an even unhealthier living situation, or potentially a foster guardian or some government employee of some sort. I'm not sure what the main point of this film was to be honest, but I was definitely intrigued and curious about Pearl and what inspired or prompted Marks to create this piece.
Keran Jiang: I have to say this movie "Pearl was Here" by Kate Marks is obsessed, the girls began to eat small stick of chewing gum on the machine, my heart was shocked, I began to think that this little girl is mentally ill, and later saw the little girl got caught doll machine, she immersed in a sea of toy play, this time, she is happy, whether it is bird close-up to, or close-up of kissing fish, have demonstrated this little girl's inner world of innocence, however, when her mother found her missing when she hiding, that she did not want to leave her world of toys, and later she was found, she said to her mother's action can be said to be rude, and her mother dress is very tired,I can guess that this little girl growing environment is very good. Many close-up on this little girl is very shocking to me, little girl's eyes impresses me, and later to the little girl's mother a slap became the climax of the story, and the crowd of people staring expression also heighten the atmosphere of tension . In short this is a short film impresses me, is a great story.
Trine Lindberg: “Pearl Was Here” by Kate Marks is a short film about a little girl named Pearl. It appears to me that Pearl wants to escape from her daily life. She discovers a claw crane filled with stuffed animals, and we can immediately see that she wants to be in there. They go back and forth between a close up of Pearl looking at the stuffed animals, and a close up of the stuffed animals. When she finally climbs in there, she feels safe. Her new ‘friends’, the stuffed animals, will protect her from the outside world. I don’t think she gets much love and attention at home, and the reason I believe this is because she uses the purple monkey’s hand so stroke her hair and face. I think this symbolizes the lack of love, Pearl faces. Another example of this is when she makes two stuffed animals kiss. When her mother is looking for her, Pearl hides. She doesn’t want to leave this safe place, that’s filled with love. When her mother finds her, she refuses to get out. She even blocks the opening with stuffed animals. It’s like she’s using them as protection or as a shield. After trying to convince Pearl to come out, her mother says, ‘Do you want me to call Russell?’ I’m positive that this is not Pearl’s biological father, because she called him, ‘Russell’. I’m guessing this is the mother’s new boyfriend, who’s not treating Pearl very well. The reason I believe this is because her mother says this as a threat, and it gets a huge reaction from Pearl. She is completely desperate; she’s screaming and throwing stuff. It’s obvious that she’s scared of him. When they’re waiting for a fireman to come, the mother says, “You’re bleeding me dry”, and hits Pearl through the glass. This again shows the lack of love between mother and daughter. When Pearl is carried out of the claw crane, her mother slaps her. Everyone that has gathered around them, are quiet, and I suppose in shock. Pearl looks up at her mother, while holding her cheek. The poor girl clearly feels unsafe. I really enjoyed the symbolisms in this short film, and I think Marks did a fantastic job.
“Pearl Was Here” is a short film by Kate Marks in which we see the adventure of Pearl in a convenience store. Pearl is wandering around the store while her mother is busy with other things and giving her no attention. She proceeds to crawl into the machine that has stuffed animals and a claw that can grab them out. She is trying to escape her life by doing this. The acting in this short film is very impressive because you can really feel the emotions that the characters are feeling. There are many different shots in this short film as well. They include many close ups and different angles. These really show a particular focus and emphasize what is happening. I think that the sounds also contribute a lot to the emotion and feeling of the film as well. It is obvious that when Pearl goes into the machine she is escaping the noise and there are many loud sounds outside of the machine that are evident. We can tell that when Pearls mom finds her she is not happy. She is screaming and yelling to try and get Pearl out which just makes Pearl cry because she doesn’t want to be in reality. The mom desperately tries to get Pearl out and her emotions are showing that. Overall the film was very good at showing the feelings and emotions through the acting, different angles and the sounds.
Kayla Cassese: In the short film “Pearl Was Here” we are introduced to the main character, Pearl, when she is checking to see if the candy machines will give her candy without her putting anything into them only to be disappointed each time nothing comes out. When a claw machine catches her eye, Pearl is drawn to it when she sees the bright faces of the toys inside. She looks to the other end of the store where her mother is trying on a new shade of lipstick. Pearl is not necessarily checking to see if she will get caught, but simply feeling neglected by her mother. She then proceeds to climb into the claw machine and dives into the toys. The angles at which this is shot mimic feelings of joy associated with discovery and wonder that can only be found in the innocence of a child. Pearl believes that these toys genuinely care for her. Once her mother finds her inside the machine, the escalating sound and the threats to “call Russell” begin, Pearl is sent into a state of panic. She does not want to leave the claw machine because it is where she feels safest and where she finds happiness. I predicted that this was indicative of abuse within the family. Once Pearl is pulled out of the claw machine, my prediction proved to be true. Her desire to remain inside the machine stems from fear of her family and of reality. I believe that overall, this short film was visually dynamic and effectively portrayed the emotions and personalities of each character by using basic elements of film.
Sydney Black: In the short film "Pearl Was Here" by Kate Marks, we meet our main character, Pearl, who is a young girl wandering around a convenient store. At first it seems she is there by her self but comes to show that her mother is wondering around the store as well. Its aparent that Pearl feels lonely. She then sees the toy crane machine and decided to climb in and lay with the animals. You can visibly see calmness and joy overcome the girl once surrounded by the stuffed animals. once her mother sees her in the machine she starts threatening her which, visibly scares Pearl. Pearl felt safe in the machine. She was surrounded my soft stuffed animals that couldn't hurt her. Once pulled out of the machine her mother aggressively slapped her. This short film very effectively portrayed emotions of each character and deeper story and meaning within a short period and time.
Caroline Ficken: "Pearl Was Here" tells the compelling story of a young girl and her discovery of a sanctuary. The setting of a convenient store illustrates a lonely place for a child, there is little color or excitement within the store, and she is constantly trying to entertain herself. Her mother shows little interest in her young daughter and as Pearl is exploring, she disappears into a child's paradise of stuffed animals. Pearl refuses to leave because of the comfort that the vending game provides for her. The cinematography colorized the excitement of the vending game as opposed to the boring, adult work of the convenient store. There are a lot of beautiful close up shots of Pearl but most of the shots featuring an adult is either a medium shot or a long shot. Emphasizing that they are far away and too big to understand the intimacy of a "happy place." Pearl is ripped away from the machine in the end and the color within shots disappears.
Julie Bowman: In the short film "Pearl Was Here," Kate Marks tells the story of a girl who runs with her imagination to escape her gloomy reality. Her mischievous childlike wonder is surrounded by bright colors inside the claw machine that contrast with the dull and boring colors in the real world: on everyone's clothing and the store itself. The fire department comes to "rescue" her but everyone soon realizes why she wanted to stay inside the toy-filled machine. The people did not really "rescue" her at all. The energetic nature of a young girl comes face to face with the contrast of the aggressive mother with a few short seconds of footage; the slap stuns everyone. The crowd that may have found Pearl to be the bad guy in the scenario quickly sees the situation from a different perspective. Kate Marks did not make this film to warm hearts. The film was created around an unfortunate societal truth that we would like to say does not happen in real life. Many people have been in a situation where they would have liked to step in, but knew it was simply not their place to interfere. There are always two sides to every story, and Kate Marks reminds viewers of that through her short film.
